The back is stamped "HAL MFG LA CA" for HAL Mfg, a Los Angeles-area maker of police and fire department pins. On page 76, the guide lists them among the government pins: the FBI, the California Highway Patrol, this Coast Guard Intelligence pin, the California National Guard, the U.S. Marshal's Service, the Secret Service, Interpol, and the C.I.A. The Coast Guard's job was the water. A review of the Coast Guard's year in the May 1985 issue of the U.S. Naval Institute's Proceedings reports that a task force of more than 700 Coast Guard regulars, reservists, and auxiliarists was on duty during the Los Angeles Games. At the height of the Games, the task force used the icebreaker Polar Star, three HH-52 helicopters, and 109 small vessels. From July 28 to August 12, during the Olympic yachting events at Long Beach, it ran port safety and security patrols and coordinated spectator boat control in the racing area. The review notes that part of the mission was preventing potential terrorist activity. Yachting World's account of the regatta describes a fleet of about 100 Coast Guard vessels standing by around the Olympic courses in case anyone strayed in and interfered with the racing.

The guide lists this pin as G104, made by Ooh La La!
