1984-los-angeles-olympic-city-of-the-xxiiird-olympiad-pin-public-works-hal
1984 Los Angeles Olympic City of the XXIIIrd Olympiad Pin ~ Public Works ~ HAL

A 1984 Los Angeles Olympic pin from the City of Los Angeles Public Works. An Olympic torch with a red flame runs up the left side of a round badge. The mauve outer ring reads "CITY OF THE XXIIIRD OLYMPIAD." In the center, a bold "LA" rises beside a stepped city-skyline silhouette against a grey sky, and the green lower half reads "PUBLIC WORKS" in gold letters. Gold-tone metal outlines every part of the design.

The story behind this pin: In the summer of 1984, Los Angeles hosted the Games of the XXIII Olympiad, and the city's own departments caught pin fever along with everyone else. The 1985 Pin Collector's Guide tells how it started. Pin collecting spread among employees of the government agencies several years before opening day, as sponsor and supplier pins began to circulate. Months of planning meetings among the agencies made the perfect setting for trading, and the headquarters of the Integrated Planning Group became, in the guide's words, "a honeycomb network of 'pin intelligence.'" The first government pin is believed to be the Los Angeles Police Department's Olympic Games Planning Group "Torch" pin. Once it broke the ice, other agencies joined in and created their own pins. Some were slight changes to existing pins and others were new designs, and many kept coming well after the closing ceremonies.

Public Works was one of those agencies. The 1985 Pin Collector's Guide pictures round Public Works pins on page 78 that share this pin's "LA" skyline logo and "PUBLIC WORKS" lettering, but none of them has the Olympic torch, and their outer rings read "City of the 84 Games." This torch design, with its ring reading "City of the XXIIIrd Olympiad," isn't pictured in the guide at all, so it's a variation the guide doesn't record. The back is stamped "HAL MFG LA CA" for HAL Mfg, a Los Angeles-area maker of police and fire department pins. HAL Manufacturing was one of the three makers the 1985 guide names in its source key (letter B), alongside Ooh La La! and Designs by Margarita. The same stamp appears on other 1984 city pins, including an LAPD Traffic Officer pin.

Year: 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics

Agency: City of Los Angeles Public Works

Maker: HAL Mfg, Los Angeles

Design: Olympic torch with red flame, "LA" skyline logo, "PUBLIC WORKS," ring reading "CITY OF THE XXIIIRD OLYMPIAD"

Style: Enamel, gold tone, cut to shape

Size: approx. 7/8" x 7/8"

Back: Stamped "HAL MFG LA CA," single post with butterfly clutch

1985 Pin Collector's Guide: not pictured.
