1984 Los Angeles Olympic Sponsor Pin ~ Miller High Life United States Olympic Training Center
A 1984 Los Angeles Olympic sponsor pin from Miller High Life for the United States Olympic Training Center. The red Miller High Life banner logo with gold wheat sprigs sits on top, above a navy blue and red shield holding the gold United States Olympic Training Center seal with the Olympic torch and the USA shield with the Olympic rings.
The pin was made with a white background, as shown in the 1985 Pin Collector's Guide (#146), whose photos show pins available by October 1984. On this pin the clear epoxy dome has aged to a warm yellow over the years. The third photo shows the guide picture next to this pin.
Why white pins turn yellow: Many pins from the 1980s were finished with a clear, domed epoxy (plastic resin) coating poured over the enamel to protect it and give it a glossy, rounded look. Over the decades, epoxy slowly yellows as it is exposed to light, especially the ultraviolet in sunlight, and to oxygen in the air. The change happens in the clear coating, not the colors underneath, so a white background can turn cream, tan or golden yellow, and the other colors look darker and warmer. It is a normal sign of age on domed epoxy pins.
