This is a 2000 Sydney Olympic Coca-Cola Day 1 pin, dated 16 Sept 2000, and it is also a puzzle pin: one piece of Coca-Cola's Sydney 2000 Pin of the Day set, whose pieces fit together into the shape of a Coke contour bottle. This large-format piece is co-branded with McDonald's. It shows a red-and-white Coca-Cola cup with a straw, the Golden Arches, a framed Sydney 2000 logo with the Olympic rings, and a small McDonald's box reading "PROUD PARTNER."

What is a Day pin?

A Day pin marks one specific day of the Olympic Games while they are underway. Coca-Cola began its "Pin of the Day" series at Lillehammer 1994, with a different design for each day of competition. At Sydney, each Day pin went on sale only on or after its date, so collectors had to come back every day. Don't mix them up with countdown pins, such as "500 Days to Go" pins, which count down to the Games before they begin. A Day pin was issued during the Games themselves. Day 1, 16 September 2000, was the first full day of competition after the Opening Ceremony. That day the first medals of the Games were awarded, and 17-year-old Ian Thorpe set a world record in the 400m freestyle, then anchored Australia's world-record 4x100m freestyle relay.

A piece of the Coke bottle puzzle

At Sydney 2000, Coca-Cola's daily pins doubled as a puzzle. Completed sets, often framed, form a Coca-Cola bottle more than a foot tall. Collector listings usually describe the set as 18 pins: a round header pin plus 17 daily pieces. Some framed sets are listed with 16, and at least one is sold as a "McDonald's & Coca-Cola" bottle puzzle.
